Children and youth are welcome to attend all Plattsmouth Garden Club's meetings, tours and other activities.  We garden together!

Photo Contest: 

Children's Division include children up to and including age 12.  Teens division includes youth ages 13-19.  All entries will receive a ribbon: a blue (1st place)  rosette ribbon, a red (2nd place) rosette ribbon, a yellow (3rd place) rosette ribbon and all remaining participants will receive an honorable mention white ribbon.  The first place winners in Children's and Teens Division will receive a monetary reward of $5.00.

Essay Contest:

Essay Contest Rules 2015-2017

2015-2016 "Don't Let the Frogs Croak"
2016-2017 "We Need our Pollinators"

The High School Essay Contest is open to High School students attending 9th through 12th grades. A $1,000 National Garden Club Scholarship will be awarded to the National Winner. If the winner is an underclassman, the $1,000 Scholarship will be held by NGC, Inc., without accrued interest, until such time that the student enters college.

At that time, the money will be forwarded to the Financial Aid Officer of the college that the student will enter. The second place winner will receive $100. The contest must be sponsored by: a single garden club, group of member clubs, councils or districts or a State Garden Club. All entries become the property of National Garden Clubs, Inc.

Length of essay: Between 600-700 words. The entry will be penalized if the essay does not conform to the required length. All words are to be counted. All entries must be typed and titled. Students should write the essay so it is suitable to be published in the NGC publication, The National Gardener.

Eligibility: Contests are open to High School students attending 9th through 12th grades. The contest must be sponsored by: single garden club, group of member clubs, councils or districts; or a State Garden Club. All entries become the property of National Garden Clubs, Inc.

Contest Deadlines:
Club entries must be sent to Nebraska Youth Awards Chairman, Susan Young by December 10th.
State Winners must be sent to Regional Chairman by February 1, 2016.
Regional Winners must be sent to National Chairman by March 1, 2016.

Flower Show:
 

Children up to but not including age 12 may participate.
The following classes may be entered by the child:

Class 1- Arrangement
              A. Fresh

              B. Dried
Class 2 - Specimens (cut flowers grown by child
Class 3 - Horticulture (potted plants grown by child)

All Flower Show rules will be followed.  Judging will be by an accredited  Flower Show Judge.

All participants will receive a ribbon which include blue 1st place, red 2nd place, yellow 3rd place or white honorable mention.  Rosette ribbions will be given to the Best Arrangement, Best Specimen, Best Horticulture and Best of Show.

Poetry Contest:


2015-2016 Theme:  "Croaking Leaping Frogs"
2016-2017 Theme:  "We Three:  Bees, Butterflies and Me"

Excite and encourage our Youth to express and explore their creative thoughts through different types of poetry. NGC's Poetry Contest enables our Youth to embrace their creativity through the art of writing. Be imaginative and join the winners to see your poetry in a printed booklet!

Eligibility:

Special Education and English as a Second Language: Kindergarten through Ninth Grade.
General Education: Kindergarten through Ninth Grade. 

Contest Rules:

  1. All entries must be typed and titled
  2. Include name, address, age, grade, and school of participant on the back of entry
  3. Sponsoring garden club and state garden club name must also be identified
  4. Sponsoring garden club may be that of a grandparent
  5. All entries become the property of National Garden Clubs, Inc.
  6. Poems do not have to rhyme
  7. Poems may be traditional verse, acrostics, blank verse, cinquains, diamond poems, limerick or Haiku

Scale of Points

  • Title: 10%
  • Content: 40%
  • Creativity: 30%
  • Style: 20%
  • Total: 100%

Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster Contest:

Smokey Bear Theme:  "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires"
Woodsy Owl Theme:  "Lend a Hand, Care for the Land"

First through fifth grade students are invited to demonstrate through original drawings of Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl their understanding of fire prevention and basic environmental conservation principles. The Grand Prize National Poster Winner will win a free round-trip airfare and accommodations for four to Washington, DC. $50 will also be awarded to the First Place National Winners from each grade level sponsored by National Garden Clubs. Plattsmouth Garden Club sponsores the National Garden Club, Inc. Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl poster contest.  The National Garden Club, Inc. and the US Department of Agriculture Forest Service have had a continuous relationship for over 50 years. 

 

Contest Deadlines:
Club entries must be sent to Nebraska Smoke Bear and Woodsy Awards Chairman, Ann Rushman by January 22, 2016.
State Winners must be sent to Regional Chairman by February 22, 2016.
Regional Winners must be sent to National Chairman by March 18, 2016

Sculpture Contest:

This contest encourages students to keep our planet green and to get involved with saving the environment. Students in grades 4 through 8 are eligible to create a sculpture of recyclable, reused and reduced materials. The sculpture is limited in width to 81/2 inches by 11 inches. Height should be proportional to width.

Contest Rules:

  1. Children in 4th grade through 8th grade will be eligible to enter the contest
  2. Width of the sculpture can be no more than 8 1/2" x 11" Must include recycled material.
  3. Height should be proportional to width
  4. Entries should include as many photographs as can be printed on the back of the entry form; (2) 4x6 photographs are recommended
  5. Club entries must be sent to State Chairman. Observe State Deadlines. State Winners must be sent to Region Chairman by February 15, 2014 and Region Winners must be sent to National Chairman by March 17, 2014

Scale of Points:

  • Creative use of materials and self expression: 60%
  • Description of sculpture and materials used: 30%
  • Craftsmanship and technique: 10%
  • Total: 100%

 National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC):  a variety of contests are available through the National Garden Clubs, Inc.  The Plattsmouth Garden Club is currently contacting the public schools and head start for the Woodsy Owl and Smokey Bear Poster Contest and the Poetry Contest.  The Plattsmouth Garden Club will sponsor any youth who wishes to participate in a NGC contest.
